St. Mark’s School Courtyard
Southborough, MA
Alumni of this private school donated money to revamp the main courtyard, which had fallen into disuse from lack of upkeep due to its poor condition. RDLA was assigned the task of transforming the space into an inviting retreat for students to read and hang out and for teachers to conduct outdoor classes. Our first job was to prune and reshape an overgrown Sugar Maple and other trees to let light back into the courtyard. Then using brick and brownstone that complemented the existing architecture, we designed a garden and small patio with benches. Bluestone for the plaza and stairs added contrast and visual interest, while low-maintenance shade-tolerant plantings were used to provide year-round color and variety. The project was completed in 2007.
