The architect in charge of the college’s McCarthy Student Center expansion hired RDLA to design a new rear terrace and front plaza and reconfigure the existing parking lot. A key demand was the need to improve the flow of students around and through the buildings. At the same time, all the entryways had to be handicap accessible. We eased pedestrian circulation by artfully incorporating existing paths into the new design and by using matching materials so the distinction between old and new was minimized. We handled car circulation by creating a simple flow-through parking lot. We pulled all these elements together with new trees and shrubs that anchor the building and parking lot and provide visual continuity. The master plan was completed in summer 2007.
