Camp Harbor View
Boston Harbor Islands, MA
Working in concert with Mayor Menino’s office, a local philanthropist commissioned RDLA to design a 12-acre Boys and Girls Club recreation facility on one of Boston’s harbor islands. His vision was to enable inner-city children to spend their summer days doing sports and guided activities rather than hanging out in their tough urban home environments. RDLA prepared the design and construction documents for tennis and basketball courts, a softball diamond, athletic fields, camp building, new roads, swimming pool, and amphitheater. The project presented two unique challenges: all of the building materials had to be barged in because the bridges could not sustain the load; and the site itself had to be raised two feet above flood zone. Construction of the first phase was completed in June 2007. Construction of the second phase was completed in June 2008.
