ABOUT THE Popup

The Trustees enlisted RDLA to design a Pop-up Park inspired by Crane Beach in Ipswich, MA.

The structure was designed to be flexible and durable in many spaces, easily deconstructed, and transported to new locations. This is a perfect example of Tactical Urbanism at work.

The adaptability of the park was proven when, just two days after the opening event in the South End, the structure was moved to a new site located along the Harborwalk at Children’s Wharf.

The design incorporates a backdrop of two graphic panels, supported by a steel framework, showcasing a sunset photo of Crane Beach. An accessible boardwalk leads visitors through two large sandboxes and into the display. Adirondack chairs and a rowboat provide fun seating for a large crowd and beach grasses in the foreground bring the stationary structure to life. A pamphlet box provides information about protected species at Crane Beach and the mission of the Trustees: “to preserve, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts.”

Visitors to the Crane Beach Pop-up Park enjoyed the soft sand beneath their feet while taking photos in front of the extraordinary Crane Beach sunset image.
