Designed by pioneering landscape architect Charles Eliot, historic Buttonwood Park is one of New Bedford’s most important public landscapes. RDLA was retained by the Friends of Buttonwood Park to develop a master plan for the North Woods, an underutilized portion of the park characterized by wetlands, invasive vegetation, woodlands and views toward Buttonwood Pond.

The plan creates a connected system of accessible trails through woodland and meadow landscapes, with new bridges across Buttonwood Creek and boardwalks designed to protect sensitive wetland resources. Interpretive signage, site furnishings and strategic removal and management of invasive vegetation enhance both the visitor experience and ecological health of the North Woods.

RDLA organized the recommendations into a phased ten-year implementation plan, providing the City and Friends group with a practical framework for restoring access, improving stewardship and bringing renewed activity to this historic landscape.
