RDLA is leading the landscape architectural design for the $12 million Walden Pond Improvements, balancing intensive public use, universal accessibility, and recreation with protection of one of Massachusetts’ most sensitive and iconic natural landscapes.

The design integrates accessible circulation, boardwalks, stormwater improvements, habitat restoration, native planting, and visitor amenities while minimizing disturbance to the pond’s shoreline, woodlands, and ecological resources.

A central challenge is creating meaningful and equitable public access within a highly constrained natural setting.

Through careful grading, circulation, material selection, and landscape restoration, the project improves accessibility and the visitor experience while preserving the site’s distinctive character. The work demonstrates how complex environmental, regulatory, and technical requirements can be resolved through thoughtful, context-sensitive design.
